In 696 BC Kirua, the Assyrian governor of Illubru, organized a revolt and, with the help of Ionian settlers in the district of Tarsus, seized the important caravan road through the Cilician gates. Sennacherib thereupon despatched an expedition thither, which defeated the rebels, captured Tarsus, and destroyed the local Ionian fleet.
