Alexander Kerensky (1881-1970), a lawyer and politician, participated in the events of the February 1917 revolution. Having become a minister and then president in May of the provisional government, he was overthrown by Lenin in October. Repin, who at first greeted the revolution with enthusiasm, became interested in Kerensky and obtained permission to make his portrait. The latter poses here in the Winter Palace, in the old library of Nicholas II, which became his office. Repin made two portraits. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a striking oil painting titled "Alexandre Kerensky with a Black Glove" created by Ilya Efimovich Repin between 1917 and 1918. This artwork is housed in the Sepherot Foundation in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The subject of the portrait, Alexandre Kerensky, was a prominent lawyer and politician who played an active role in the February 1917 revolution. After assuming positions as both minister and president within the provisional government, he was eventually overthrown by Lenin during October of that same year. Repin's initial enthusiasm for the revolution led him to take an interest in Kerensky and seek permission to paint his portrait. The setting chosen for this particular piece is the Winter Palace, specifically within Nicholas II's old library which served as Kerensky's office. Repin actually painted two portraits of Kerensky, one of which he generously donated to Moscow's Museum of the Revolution in 1926 through a delegation of Soviet painters visiting his studio. In Sylvain Collet's photograph, we see this remarkable painting up close, showcasing its intricate details and vibrant colors. The composition highlights Kerensky seated at a writing desk adorned with various documents while wearing an elegant black glove on his right hand. This image not only serves as a testament to Repin's artistic skill but also offers us insight into one of Russia's pivotal political figures during this tumultuous period in history.
