HMS Edinburgh on anti-torpedo exercise, c.1887 (oil on canvas)

7337796 HMS Edinburgh on anti-torpedo exercise, c.1887 (oil on canvas) by Martino, Eduardo de (1838-1912); 52x91.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Eduardo de Martino
HMS Edinburgh, shown with anti-torpedo nets out in a mock exercise against torpedo boats in about 1887. Smoke billows from her guns to the left. Torpedo nets were hung over the side of ships in an attempt to protect them against attack from small and fast surface torpedo boats. These carried two pole-spars with explosive charges attached to their ends and attacked by ramming. On approaching the target ship behind the nets, the torpedo-boat crews were exposed to immense danger. In the centre on the right a torpedo boat has been depicted with a small crew holding two of the long pole-spars, their explosive charges clearly visible. Other similar boats have been positioned closer to the ship, carrying out their attacks. A line of ships at anchor can be seen in the distance. The grey sky and cold blue of the sea indicate the unpleasant nature of the task undertaken by the torpedo-boat crews.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil on canvas painting by Eduardo de Martino depicts the HMS 'Edinburgh' engaged in an anti-torpedo exercise around 1887. The ship is shown with its anti-torpedo nets deployed, a crucial defense mechanism against torpedo attacks from small and fast surface boats. In the background, smoke billows from the guns of the 'Edinburgh', adding to the sense of action and tension in the scene. The painting captures a moment of high stakes as torpedo boats approach the protected ship, their explosive charges visible on long pole-spars. The crew members onboard these small vessels are depicted carrying out their risky mission with determination and skill. The grey sky and cold blue sea emphasize the harsh conditions faced by these brave sailors during such exercises. In the distance, a line of ships at anchor serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required to defend against potential threats at sea. Martino's attention to detail and ability to convey movement make this artwork a powerful representation of naval warfare tactics in the late 19th century. Overall, this painting offers viewers a glimpse into a dramatic moment in maritime history, highlighting both technological advancements and strategic challenges faced by naval forces during this period.
