7309954 Painting of the reimagined Queen's Megaron from the Palace of Minos at Knossos, 1971-2000 (paper) by Gillieron, Emile (1851-1924); 33.5x47.5 cm; Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, UK; (add.info.: The Queen's Megaron lies in the Royal Apartments next to the "Hall of the Double Axes". It is a smaller room with a similar layout and rich decoration. Evans thought that it must have belonged to the Queen. Fragments of frescoes with dolphins and dancing ladies were found here. The room is largely restored and copies of the wall paintings have been put up on the walls. At the end of the room, a low partition wall with one column created a small space. It was thought that it was the "Queen's Bathroom" since pieces of a clay "bath" were found there.); © Ashmolean Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the reimagined Queen's Megaron from the Palace of Minos at Knossos, created by Emile Gillieron between 1971 and 2000. The artwork measures 33.5x47.5 cm and is currently housed in the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford, UK. The Queen's Megaron is situated within the Royal Apartments adjacent to the renowned "Hall of the Double Axes". It is a smaller room with an exquisite layout and lavish decoration, believed to have belonged to royalty. Fragments of frescoes featuring dolphins and dancing ladies were discovered here, adding to its allure. The room has been meticulously restored, with copies of the original wall paintings adorning its walls. At one end of this magnificent space lies a low partition wall accompanied by a solitary column, creating a small enclosed area that was once thought to be the "Queen's Bathroom" as remnants of a clay bath were found there. In this early 20th-century photograph, two individuals engage in conversation while admiring this remarkable reconstruction. Their animated discussion undoubtedly revolves around Greek antiquity, artistry, and architectural marvels like Knossos. With its intricate illustrations and ornate details capturing ancient Greece's opulence and wealth, this painting transports viewers back in time to experience life within these grand palatial dwellings firsthand. The vibrant frescoes on display further enhance our understanding of Greek history and culture. Overall, this image serves as both an educational tool for studying ancient civilizations and an artistic masterpiece that celebrates human creativity throughout history.
