Sphere and stand, c.1890 (plaster, printed lithography, varnish, papier mache, brass, wood, paper, ink)

7339588 Sphere and stand, c.1890 (plaster, printed lithography, varnish, papier mache, brass, wood, paper, ink) by Johnston, Alexander Keith (1804-71); 24.4x23.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: William Johnston; Alexander Keith Johnston
Terrestrial table globe. It forms a pair with the celestial globe Johnston, GLB0252. Geographical details on the sphere are the same as Johnston GLB0067, but there are a few differences. For instance, the names of the SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN and ANTARCTIC OCEAN have been added. The name Sofala in Africa is changed into Mozambique. The name of the steam packet route from Suez to Bombay, not the route itself, is removed, and South Victoria 1841 is changed into South Victoria Land'. On GLB0067 Zanzibar l is not underlined in red but on GLB0251 it is.
As with GLB0067, Greeley Fiord is indicated north of Greenland. In the south polar area there are labels for nine regions, including, for example, Supposed Southern continent, Emp. Peter I and Graham Island'. Telegraph lines in the oceans are marked and labelled, which connect Europe with North America and India with Malaya/China, and in Australia there is a line marked and labelled. A total of seven oceans are named.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate details of a Sphere and stand from around 1890, created by William Johnston and Alexander Keith Johnston. The terrestrial table globe is a work of art, made with plaster, printed lithography, varnish, papier mache, brass, wood, paper, and ink. It measures 24.4x23.5 cm and is housed at the National Maritime Museum in London. The globe showcases geographical details similar to other works by Johnston but with some notable differences. Names such as 'SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN' and 'ANTARCTIC OCEAN' have been added while others have been altered or removed entirely. Labels for various regions including 'Supposed Southern continent' and 'Emp. Peter I' can be seen in the south polar area. Telegraph lines connecting Europe with North America and India with Malaya/China are marked on the oceans along with seven named oceans overall. The attention to detail in this piece is truly remarkable. This Sphere and stand serves not only as a navigational tool but also as a beautiful decorative piece that reflects the cartographic knowledge of its time period. It stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of Johnston's work in creating globes that were both functional tools for exploration and exquisite works of art in their own right.
