Burke travelled with Lieutenant-General Sir Sam BrowneAs Peshawar Valley Field Force as an unofficial photographer. During its advance through the Khyber pass towards Jalalabad (occupied on 20 December 1878), he took many photographs of the landscape and the tribes who lived there. The Khurd Khyber defile was located at the western entrance of the pass.
