931437 Life in the Esquimaux Igloe, Etah, illustration from The Second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, 1856 (engraving) by Kane, Elisha (1820-57) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853 was an American effort, financed by Henry Grinnell, to determine the fate of the Franklins lost expedition. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane, the team explored areas northwest of Greenland, now called Grinnell Land. While failing to determine the fate of Sir John Franklin, the expedition set a new record for northward penetration, delineated 960 mi (1, 540 km) of unexplored coastline north of 82A latitude, and discovered the long-sought open Polar Sea. Kane collected valuable geographical, climate and magnetic observations before abandoning the brig Advance to the pack ice in 1855. While three members of the crew were lost, the epic journey of the survivors inspired the public as a vivid tale of Arctic survival.); The Stapleton Collection; American, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Life in the Esquimaux Igloe, Etah" takes us back to a significant moment in history. The image is an illustration from The Second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, which took place in 1856. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane, this American expedition aimed to unravel the mystery surrounding Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. The scene depicted showcases life inside an igloo inhabited by the indigenous people known as Esquimaux (now called Inuit) at Etah, a remote location northwest of Greenland. Despite the harsh Arctic conditions, these resilient individuals have managed to create a warm and functional living space within their snow shelter. The engraving beautifully captures the intricacies of daily life within the igloo walls. We see men and women engaged in various activities such as cooking food over an open fire, tending to children wrapped snugly in furs, and crafting tools essential for survival on icy terrain. Beyond its artistic appeal, this illustration holds historical significance as it documents not only the exploration efforts but also valuable geographical and climate observations made during the expedition. Although unable to determine Sir John Franklin's fate directly, this journey set new records for northward penetration and unveiled previously unexplored coastlines. Through this print from Fine Art Finder's Stapleton Collection, we are transported into a world where resilience meets resourcefulness amidst extreme conditions—a testament to human adaptability and determination that continues to inspire us today.
