The Colosseum, Rome, Italy, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
The Colosseum, Rome, Italy, 1951. The ancient roman Colosseum in Rome, Italy, constructed AD 70-82, is the largest amphitheatre ever built. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, taken by Shirley Markham in 1951, transports us back to a time when this ancient wonder stood tall and proud. Constructed between AD 70-82, the Colosseum remains the largest amphitheatre ever built, a testament to Roman engineering and grandeur. Shirley Markham was an aspiring artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at London's Central School of Art from 1950-1952. Under the guidance of renowned artist Mervyn Peake and inspired by British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone and Quentin Blake, she developed her unique style of drawing. During her travels in Italy, Markham sketched classical buildings such as the Colosseum. After graduation, Markham embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer, creating book illustrations, comics cartoons, menus, and programs. However promising her talent may have been, societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957. Middle-class women during that era were often expected to prioritize family life over their professional aspirations. Sadly for art enthusiasts everywhere but fortunately for posterity's sake - her portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic for many years until now. This remarkable collection is finally being published for all to appreciate Shirley Markham's exceptional artistic contributions. Through this stunning photograph captured more than half a century ago by an unassuming yet talented artist named Shirley Markham emerges not only the beauty of Rome's iconic Colosseum but also a poignant reminder of how societal norms can sometimes stifle individual potential.
