Accident at the Castle Mills, Sheffield, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Accident at the Castle Mills, Sheffield, 1854. Building collapse in Yorkshire....a portion of the Castle Mills, situate in Blonk-street, belonging to Messrs. Wm. Parker and Co. gave way and fell to the ground with a tremendous crash...Those working in that part of the building were buried beneath the fallen roof. Shovels, pickaxes, and crowbars having been procured, men set to work amongst the debris, and in the course of an hour eight persons were got out, more or less injured...Different opinions exist as to the cause of the accident. Some believe that the foundations near the boiler gave way, whilst others conjecture that the superincumbent weight of machinery, throwing too great stress upon the iron girders which supported the brick arches, had brought the whole to the ground...A dray-horse was killed by the falling building'. Accident at the Castle Mills, Sheffield, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an evocative and intriguing image captured by an unknown photographer, showcasing the aftermath of a tragic industrial accident that occurred in Blonk-street, Sheffield, England. The Castle Mills, owned by Messrs. Wm. Parker and Co., were the site of this calamitous event, as a portion of the building suddenly gave way and collapsed with a deafening crash. The incident resulted in the burial of several workers beneath the fallen roof. The community rallied together in response, using shovels, pickaxes, and crowbars to dig through the debris and rescue those trapped inside. Within an hour, eight individuals were successfully extracted, albeit with various injuries. The cause of the accident remains a subject of debate. Some believe that the foundations near the boiler had weakened and given way, while others speculate that the excessive weight of the machinery placed too much stress on the iron girders supporting the brick arches, ultimately leading to the building's collapse. Regrettably, a dray-horse was also unfortunate enough to be killed by the falling structure. This haunting photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, offers a poignant glimpse into the harsh realities of the industrial age and the risks faced by workers in the factories of the time. The image is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the community, as well as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in the workplace.
