EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense moment of Albrecht von Wallenstein leading his troops at the Battle of Lutzen in 1632. Painted by Arthur C Michael in 1913, this artwork depicts Wallenstein on horseback, sword drawn and charging fearlessly through the ranks of soldiers. The Battle of Lutzen was a significant engagement during the Thirty Years War between Sweden and the Holy Roman Empire. In this historic clash, King Gustavus Adolphus commanded the Swedish army while Wallenstein led the forces of the Holy Roman Empire. Although ultimately victorious, it came at a great cost as Gustavus Adolphus lost his life while bravely leading a cavalry charge. Wallenstein's commanding presence is evident in this painting as he rides with determination and courage. His flowing cloak adds to his majestic appearance, symbolizing his status as Duke of Friedland and Mecklenburg. The artist skillfully uses color to convey both intensity and drama within this historical context. This artwork serves as an inspiration for leadership, highlighting Wallenstein's commitment to leading from the frontlines rather than directing from afar. It also reflects on religious undertones prevalent during that time period, with Catholicism playing a significant role in shaping alliances and conflicts. Displayed against a backdrop reminiscent of Saxony-Anhalt's landscape where Lutzen is located, this print offers viewers a glimpse into history while reminding us of bravery amidst chaos.
