EDITORS COMMENTS
Ayant eu la fâcheuse idée d'aller...en mer" (Someone had the annoying idea of going for a little trip on the sea), is a lithograph created by the renowned French artist Honore Daumier in 1852. Part of his series "Les Trains de plaisir" (The Pleasure Trains), this satirical work was originally published in the French magazine Le Charivari on September 23, 1852. The image captures a group of men on the deck of a sailing ship, looking miserable and sick. One man, dressed in a top hat and a long coat, clutches his stomach in agony, while another, wearing a striped shirt and a straw hat, leans over the railing, retching. A third man, wearing a fashionable waistcoat and a bowler hat, covers his mouth with a handkerchief, trying to avoid the nauseating smell. The title of the work alludes to the men's collective misfortune - seasickness. Daumier masterfully captures the discomfort and frustration of a day trip gone wrong. The men's apparel, from the top hats to the striped shirts, adds to the humorous and satirical tone of the work. This black and white lithograph is a testament to the universal experience of being sick and the annoyance of being trapped on a boat during bad weather. It is a reminder of the 19th century's fascination with the sea and the challenges of sailing. Today, it is a valuable addition to the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where it continues to amuse and intrigue viewers with its wit and insight into human nature. Honore Daumier's "Ayant eu la fâcheuse idée d'aller...en mer" is a classic example of the artist's ability to capture the absurdity and humor in everyday life, making it a must-see for anyone interested in art, history, or the simple joys of a day out on the sea.
