(What was Lens; The Signboard that Alone Indicated Lens), 1918, is a haunting photograph that captures the aftermath of the Battle of Lens during the Hundred Days Offensive of World War I. The location of this poignant image is in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, on the Western Front. The photograph, from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924, shows a desolate and devastated landscape. The ruins of a building, likely a commercial establishment, are all that remain standing amidst the rubble and shell damage. The only indication that this was once a bustling town is a solitary signboard, its letters still legible, bearing the name "Lens." The Hundred Days Offensive, also known as the Second Battle of the Marne, was a series of battles fought between August and November 1918. It marked the beginning of the end of World War I, with the Allied forces pushing back the German army and eventually leading to the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918.
