EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century portrait captures the elegance and grace of Christina Augusta von Fersen, née Löwenhielm (1754-1846). The Countess von Fersen was a prominent figure at the Swedish court during the reign of King Carl XIII (1746-1751). Known for her beauty and intelligence, she was a favorite of the king and served as his mistress. The portrait, painted by Per Hillestrom the Elder (1725-1785), showcases the aristocratic fashion of the time. Christina Augusta wears a full-length, hooped dress made of rich, vibrant brocade. The intricate fabric, with its bold patterns and vibrant colors, was a hallmark of the neo-classical artistic movement that dominated the 18th century. The Countess's arms are outstretched, inviting the viewer to join her in a dance or perhaps a conversation. The crinoline hoop skirt, a popular fashion accessory of the time, adds volume and fullness to the dress, accentuating the elegance of the wearer. The portrait is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Swedish aristocracy during the 18th century. It is currently housed in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors with its timeless beauty and historical significance.
