The Combined Fleet in China - transports in Cowloong Bay preparing to get under way for... 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Combined Fleet in China - transports in Cowloong Bay preparing to get under way for the north - from a sketch by our special artist at Hong-Kong, 1860. British warships at anchor. Advices from China are - Hong-Kong, June 7; Shanghai, May 30. The following is from the summary of the Hong-Kong China Mail: "Since the departure of last mail nothing of a political nature has taken place in regard to our relations with China, unless the success of the rebels near Shanghai may affect the progress of events. Most of the transports which had left for the north have had to put back to this port, on account of adverse winds, and it is uncertain when they may again take their departure, as the south-east monsoon has scarcely yet set in. It is not likely that any general movement will take place until the arrival of the British and French Envoys Extraordinary, who are expected to arrive by the mail now due. Sir Hope Grant and Admiral Hope stiff remain at Hong-Kong, but are expected to leave in a very few days'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Combined Fleet in China - transports in Cowloong Bay preparing to get under way for the north' is an intriguing glimpse into the past, hailing from the turbulent year of 1860. The image, created by an unknown artist based on a sketch from Hong-Kong, depicts a bustling harbor scene at Cowloong Bay, with a fleet of British warships anchored in the background. The transports, seen in the foreground, are readying themselves to set sail for the north, their sails partially unfurled and their anchors raised. The year 1860 was a pivotal moment in the history of China and Britain, marked by the Second Opium War and the subsequent Treaty of Tianjin. The British and French forces had invaded China, and the treaty would result in significant concessions, including the opening of more ports to foreign trade and the cession of Hong Kong Island to the British. The caption accompanying the image, taken from the 'Illustrated London News,' provides valuable context to the scene. The transports had been delayed from their departure due to adverse winds and the uncertain arrival of the British and French envoys. The political situation in China was uncertain, with the success of the rebels near Shanghai potentially impacting the progress of events. Sir Hope Grant and Admiral Hope, key British figures in the conflict, were still at Hong-Kong but were expected to leave soon. The arrival of the envoys was crucial, as they would play a significant role in negotiating the terms of the treaty. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, providing a window into the complex political and military landscape of the time. Despite being over 160 years old, the image remains a captivating reminder of the rich history that continues to shape our world today.
