Embarkation of Her Majesty, at Hull, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Embarkation of Her Majesty, at Hull, 1854. Queen Victoria leaves Hull in Yorkshire. The pier...was covered with a substantial roof...and beneath this more seats were erected for the accommodation of spectators...Several bouquets were cast at the feet of the Queen, perhaps not exactly in accordance with strict ideas of courtly propriety...Again the cannon thundered, and again military bands vied with each other in their performance of the National Anthem. Her Majesty descended the carpeted slope which led down from the pier, and was handed on board her yacht by the Prince Consort. The guns of the Malacca, a steam corvette, which served as escort to the Fairy, boomed forth a Royal salute, and yards manned in every ship within sight. The broad estuary of the Humber was covered with steamers and small craft, which made vain efforts to keep up with the Royal yacht...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Embarkation of Her Majesty at Hull, 1854: A Grand Farewell This image depicts the historic moment of Queen Victoria's departure from Hull, in East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in 1854. The scene is set at the bustling Humber Estuary, where the pier, adorned with an impressive architectural archway, was transformed into a grandstand for the thousands of spectators who had gathered to bid their monarch farewell. The pier, covered with a substantial roof, was further enhanced with additional seats for the comfort of the onlookers. As the Queen prepared to embark on her journey, several bouquets were thrown at her feet, a gesture perhaps not strictly in accordance with courtly propriety but a testament to the deep-rooted affection the people held for their sovereign. The air was filled with the sounds of cannon fire and military bands performing the National Anthem. Queen Victoria descended the carpeted slope leading to her yacht, the HMY Fairy, and was assisted on board by her consort, Prince Albert. The Malacca, a steam corvette serving as the escort to the Fairy, boomed forth a Royal salute, and every ship within sight returned the gesture with their own displays of national pride. The broad estuary of the Humber was dotted with steamers and small craft, all making vain attempts to keep up with the Royal yacht. The scene was a testament to the patriotic spirit of the British people, as they gathered to witness the departure of their beloved Queen, who would soon embark on her journey to India to be crowned Empress." From the pages of the Illustrated London News, this engraving offers a glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of the 19th century, as Queen Victoria left Hull on her way to India, leaving behind a trail of cheers, music, and enduring memories.
