EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Havana in 1720, offering a glimpse into the bustling capital of the island during that time. With its population exceeding thirty thousand inhabitants, Havana was a vibrant city with a rich history. However, this image also reminds us of the darker side of its past. In 1717, an uprising known as the mutiny incited the vegueros (tobacco farmers) to rebel against their circumstances. They embarked on a daring journey, capturing Captain General Vicente Raja and taking him to Spain. The consequences were severe for twelve of them who paid with their lives when they were hanged in Jesus del Monte three years later. Amidst these turbulent times, this photo captures an elevated view of Havana's harbor where ships docked regularly. It serves as a reminder not only of transportation and trade but also highlights the geographical features that made Cuba such an important location in North and Central America. The monochrome image evokes nostalgia for bygone eras while providing valuable insights into colonialism and historical events shaping Havana's destiny. This particular print is part of "The History of Cuba" series produced by Geografico Universal and used for propaganda purposes by Susini y La Corona Cigar Company. As we observe this snapshot from the early 20th century, it allows us to reflect upon both the beauty and complexities embedded within Havana's past – a city forever shaped by its people, crimes committed at sea, and its pivotal
