House of Sanchez, c1830, (1907). Creator: Unknown
House of Sanchez, c1830, (1907). Building in the grounds of the Alhambra, Granada, Spain, which mainly dates from the 14th century. La Casa Sanchez, so-called from having been the dwelling of an honest muleteer of that name, was once one of the most picturesque and most Moorish of dwellings. But, alas! in the year 1837, whole front was " restored" and " beautified", and an ancient fish-pond...was filled up and converted into a garden by one of the resident officers of the Palace. After John Frederick Lewis. From " The Alhambra: being a brief record of the Arabian conquest of the Peninsula with a particular account of the Mohammedan architecture and decoration" by Albert F. Calvert. [John Lane, London & New York, 1907]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the House of Sanchez, a historic building located in the enchanting grounds of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Dating back to the 14th century, this architectural gem was once hailed as one of the most picturesque and Moorish dwellings in its time. However, it suffered a tragic fate in 1837 when its entire front was "restored" and "beautified", losing some of its original charm. The house derived its name from an honest muleteer named Sanchez who resided there long ago. It stood as a testament to both Spanish history and Islamic influence on architecture during that era. Unfortunately, one of the resident officers decided to fill up an ancient fish-pond within its premises and convert it into a garden. Captured by an unknown creator but immortalized through this print, we are reminded of John Frederick Lewis' work on The Alhambra: being a brief record of the Arabian conquest of the Peninsula with a particular account of Mohammedan architecture and decoration". This image takes us back to a time where Hispano-Arabic aesthetics flourished amidst stunning landscapes. Today, despite these alterations over centuries past, visitors can still appreciate glimpses into Spain's rich heritage at this UNESCO World Heritage site. As tourists explore Granada's cultural treasures, they are transported back in time while admiring buildings like House of Sanchez that have witnessed dynasties rise and fall throughout history.
