Illumination of the Bourse, at Paris, in Honour of the Birth of the Prince Imperial, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Illumination of the Bourse, at Paris, in Honour of the Birth of the Prince Imperial, 1856. The illuminations on Sunday night were the most general that have been seen in Paris for years. Not only were all the public offices, theatres, ministries, &c. brilliantly lit up, but private houses almost everywhere hung out many coloured lanterns. Those of the Bourse shone forth conspicuously, and were the more remarked because the Bourse had never illuminated on any of the many recent occasions of public rejoicing. The decoration...consisted of a triumphal arch, surmounted by an Imperial crown. On the frieze was the inscription, in coloured lamps, "The Agens de Change to the Imperial Prince." The arch was united by garlands of flowers and evergreens to four pyramids, surmounted with stars, ornamented with the national flag, and bearing the inscriptions, "Vive l'Empereur!" "Vive l'lmperatrice!". From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the Illumination of the Bourse in Paris, held in honor of the birth of the Prince Imperial, Napoleon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, in 1856. The illuminations were the most extensive in Paris for years, with public offices, theatres, ministries, and private houses adorned with colorful lanterns. The Bourse, or the Paris Stock Exchange, stood out prominently among the illuminated buildings, as it had never been illuminated for any previous occasions of public rejoicing. The decoration of the Bourse was a triumphal arch, crowned with an Imperial crown. The frieze bore the inscription, "The Agents of Change to the Imperial Prince," symbolizing the financial support and loyalty of the Bourse to the new prince. The arch was adorned with garlands of flowers and evergreens, connecting it to four pyramids, each topped with stars and the national flag. The inscriptions on the pyramids read, "Long live the Emperor!" and "Long live the Empress!" reflecting the collective excitement and joy of the Parisian people for the birth of the future heir to the French throne.
