EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving is an elegant portrait of The late Sir Anthony Rothschild, 1st Baronet, who passed away in 1876. Sir Anthony was born in May 1810, in Frankfurt, as the second son of Baron Nathan Meyer Rothschild, who later established the Rothschild family's wealth and influence in London. Sir Anthony was the grandson of Meyer Amschel Rothschild, the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty. In his distinguished career, Sir Anthony served as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1861 and was the Austrian Consul-General in London since 1858. He left behind two daughters, Constance and Annie, who was married to the Hon. Eliot Yorke, the son of the Earl of Hardwicke. Sir Anthony was created a Baronet in 1846, with the limitation that the title would pass to the sons of his elder brother, Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, in the event that Sir Anthony did not have any issue of his own. Consequently, the title now belongs to his nephew, Sir Nathan Meyer de Rothschild, M.P. for Aylesbury. This portrait of Sir Anthony Rothschild, with its formal attire and serious expression, is a testament to his esteemed position in society during the 19th century. The image is from the Illustrated London News, published in 1876, and is an intriguing glimpse into the life of this influential and affluent figure.
