The late Sir George Harvey, 1876. This eminent Scottish artist, who died at Edinburgh...at the age of seventy, was a veteran member of his profession in North Britain. He was one of the earliest Associates of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1826, and held the office of President after the death of Sir John Watson Gordon, in 1864. He received the honour of knighthood in 1867. The pictures by Sir George Harvey which have gained most public favour are those of historical subjects, and more especially those which represent famous incidents in the history of the Scottish Covenanters...Many of his works have been engraved and published. Sir George Harvey wrote, in 1870, an interesting memoir of the Royal Scottish Academy. He was twice married, but has left no widow surviving his decease'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

This photograph captures the late Sir George Harvey, a renowned Scottish artist who passed away in Edinburgh at the age of seventy in 1876. An esteemed figure in the North British art scene, Sir George was one of the earliest Associates of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1826 and held the esteemed position of President after the death of Sir John Watson Gordon in 1864.
