EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases Dr. David Livingstone's expedition camp at the mouth of the Kongone River on the Zambezi Delta in Africa, circa 1860. The engraving is derived from a sketch by Thomas Baines, the official artist of the Livingstone expedition. The Zambezi River, also known as the Secheke, originates in the interior marshes and is the primary watercourse of an extensive system explored by Livingstone in 1856. The river, located at latitude 17 degrees 57 minutes south and longitude 26 degrees 6 minutes east, bends to the south and forms a magnificent cascade. To the north, it is joined by its largest tributary, the Kafue. After turning eastward, the Zambezi River eventually empties into the Mozambique Channel, creating a delta stretching over 300 miles in length. At the mouth of the Kongone River, Livingstone's station is depicted, with Her Majesty's sloop of war, Lynx, anchored offshore. Commanded by Lieutenant-Commander H. Berkeley, the Lynx was dispatched from the Cape by Admiral Sir Frederick Grey to provide relief to Livingstone's expedition. The boats from the Lynx are shown pulling in over the bar, ready to rendezvous with the explorers. This evocative scene encapsulates the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized Livingstone's groundbreaking exploration of Central Africa during the mid-19th century.
