Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1929

Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1929. Marie (1867-1934) and her husband Pierre Curie continued the work on radioactivity started by Henri Becquerel. In 1898, they discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. Marie did most of the work of producing these elements, and to this day her notebooks are still too radioactive to use. She went on to become the first woman to be awarded a doctorate in France, and continued her work after Pierres death in 1906. In 1903 the Curies shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel. Marie won a second Nobel Prize, for chemistry, in 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind and indomitable spirit of Marie Curie, a Polish-born French physicist. Taken in 1929, it showcases Marie's unwavering dedication to her groundbreaking work on radioactivity, which she continued alongside her husband Pierre Curie after Henri Becquerel's initial discovery. Together, they unearthed two new elements - polonium and radium - in 1898. Marie played a pivotal role in producing these elements, but their potency remains so strong that even today her notebooks are too radioactive to handle. Despite this risk, she fearlessly pursued her scientific endeavors and became the first woman to be awarded a doctorate in France. Tragically widowed by Pierre's death in 1906, Marie carried on with unyielding determination. In recognition of their remarkable contributions to physics, the Curies were jointly honored with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 alongside Becquerel himself. Not content with just one accolade, Marie later earned another Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. This portrait not only immortalizes Marie Curie as an iconic figure but also serves as a testament to women's immense potential within the field of science during the early twentieth century. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of scientists worldwide while reminding us of the extraordinary achievements made by individuals who dare to challenge societal norms and push boundaries for knowledge and progress.
