He was a proponent of educational reform, as well as a liberal free market economy and equal rights for all, regardless of race or sex, ideas well ahead of his time. Condorcet played a prominent role in the French Revolution, drafting a new constitution for France in 1793. Like so many others however, he fell foul of Maximilien Robespierre, and having been arrested, was found dead in his prison cell on 28 March 1794

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Marquis de Condorcet, a prominent figure of the French Enlightenment. Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat, also known as Condorcet, was not only a philosopher but also a sociologist who championed progressive ideas well ahead of his time. Condorcet believed in educational reform, advocating for equal rights for all individuals regardless of their race or gender. He strongly supported a liberal free market economy and played an influential role in drafting France's new constitution during the French Revolution in 1793. However, like many others during this tumultuous period, Condorcet faced opposition from Maximilien Robespierre. Unfortunately, he fell victim to political persecution and was arrested. Tragically, on March 28th, 1794, he was found dead in his prison cell. This wood engraving portrait captures the essence of Condorcet's intellectual prowess and determination. His profile exudes strength and resilience as he fought tirelessly for his beliefs amidst political turmoil. The print serves as a powerful reminder of Condorcet's significant contributions to politics and philosophy during the eighteenth century. It immortalizes him as an inspiring figure who dared to challenge societal norms and fight for equality and justice for all.
