EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Queen Victoria's arrival at her new marine residence, Osborne House, in East Cowes. The year is 1845, and Her Majesty has traveled all the way from Windsor Castle to the Isle of Wight with her family. The journey began with a South Western Railway train ride from Farnborough Station followed by a special train to Gosport. Having officially notified the naval and military commanders in-chief at Portsmouth of her intention to visit Osborne House, preparations for Queen Victoria's reception commenced both ashore and afloat. In this image, we see the Queen leaving Cowes by carriage after crossing the Solent straits on her royal yacht Fairy. The architectural beauty of the newly built landing place shines through as it stands proudly against the backdrop of East Cowes. This photograph not only showcases an important moment in British history but also highlights Victorian transportation methods with its horse-drawn carriage prominently featured. Published in "Illustrated London News" during that era, this engraving offers us a glimpse into a time when newspapers played a crucial role in documenting significant events for public consumption. As we admire this remarkable piece captured by an unknown creator, we are reminded of Queen Victoria's influential reign as Empress of India and sovereign over Great Britain and Ireland.
