Osborne House - the Garden Front, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Osborne House - the Garden Front, 1850. Royal residence on the Isle of Wight: The entrance tower, with lofty campanile, is a conspicuous object...the main building...contains a great number of rooms for the Royal Family. The pleasure-grounds, or gardens, are very prettily laid out, and contain a profusion of flowering shrubs...The shrubs and dwarf trees, we should mention, are not entirely Royal additions to the beauties of Osborne, as great numbers of them, and especially those of larger growth - were planted by the former possessors of Osborne...the unassuming yet elegant character of Osborne is one of its most agreeable features; and, indeed, to our minds, this perfect simplicity, so opposed to regal grandeur, is proof of the high taste of refinement displayed by the Queen and Prince Albert in making this their retreat from the bustle of a London season'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Osborne House - the Garden Front, 1850: A Royal Retreat on the Isle of Wight This print depicts the Garden Front of Osborne House, a stunning royal residence located on the Isle of Wight, England. The image, created in 1850, showcases the entrance tower with its lofty campanile, a conspicuous feature of this Italianate-style country house. The main building, with its numerous rooms designed for the Royal Family, sits gracefully in the background. The pleasure-grounds or gardens, as described in the Illustrated London News, are beautifully arranged and brimming with an abundance of flowering shrubs. The shrubs and dwarf trees, mentioned in the text, were not only added by the current Royal Family but also by the former owners of Osborne. The unassuming yet elegant character of Osborne House is one of its most appealing features. Contrasting the regal grandeur typically associated with royal residences, this perfect simplicity is a testament to the high taste and refinement displayed by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in making Osborne their retreat from the bustle of London. The entrance tower, adorned with flags, stands proudly, while the belfry and bell tower add to the architectural charm of the estate. The trees and shrubs, in full bloom, add a touch of nature to the exterior, creating a picturesque scene that has stood the test of time. This engraved print, from the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 19th century and the elegant era of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
