Brees, from drawings made by him during his location in New Zealand as principal engineer and surveyor to the New Zealand Company...a party of surveyors and men bivouacking in the bush. The several varieties of trees, and their size, are observed...The encampment is always made near a stream, for the convenience of water...An immense fire is constantly kept up in front, day and night...The scenery of this Panorama is remarkably well painted; the picturesqueness, the mountain grandeur, and the forestial wealth of this truly wonderful country, are beautifully depicted...The information afforded by the picture, as well as by Mr. Brees's explanatory lecture, will be as important to any intending emigrant as it is interesting to the sight-seer'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled 'Panorama of New Zealand - Bivouack of Surveyors, 1850,' showcases a scene of a party of surveyors and their men taking a break during their exploration of New Zealand's lush bushland. The creator of this image is unknown, but it is known that it was painted by Samuel Charles Brees based on his sketches made during his tenure as the principal engineer and surveyor for the New Zealand Company. The encampment is situated near a sparkling stream, providing the necessary water for the group. An enormous fire burns in front of the tents, day and night, providing warmth and light. The panorama's scenery is remarkably well-painted, capturing the picturesque beauty, mountain grandeur, and forest wealth of this extraordinary country. The various trees and their sizes are meticulously observed, adding to the authenticity of the scene. The moon, positioned high in the night sky, casts a soft glow over the camp, with the full moon illuminating the estuary in the background.
