EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century portrait, created by the Dutch artist Jan Maurits Quinkhard (1710-1785), depicts Jacobus Schotte (1732-1771), the Burgomaster of Middelburg, a historic city in the Netherlands. The portrait, painted in the Baroque style, showcases Schotte's distinguished appearance with his elaborate attire and well-groomed beard and moustache. The Burgomaster is dressed in the fashionable clothing of the time, with a long, dark coat, a crisp white shirt, and a colorful waistcoat. His collar is adorned with a voluminous ruff, a popular accessory during the Baroque era. The portrait is further enhanced by the gilded frame, adding an air of grandeur and importance to the image. Quinkhard masterfully captures the essence of Schotte's character, conveying a sense of authority and sophistication. The use of sepia tones in the painting adds to the historical authenticity, transporting us back to the 18th century. Schotte served as Burgomaster of Middelburg from 1762 until his death in 1771. The portrait hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Netherlands and the artistic prowess of Jan Maurits Quinkhard.
