Pump in Ray-Street, Clerkenwell-Green, supplied from the Clerks Well, 1857. Creator: Unknown

Pump in Ray-Street, Clerkenwell-Green, supplied from the Clerks Well, [London], 1857. A relic of old Clerkenwell has just been removed...it is associated with, and is the representative of, the patronymic spring from which the parish is named - i.e. the well, around which the parish clerks, or clerken, were wont to assemble to act Scripture plays...The inscription-board [reads:] "A.D. 1800. Willm. Bound, Joseph Bird - Churchwardens. For the better accommodation of the neighbourhood this pump was removed to the spot where it now stands. The spring by which it is supplied is situated four feet eastward; and round it, as history informs us, the parish clerks of London, in remote ages, annually performed sacred plays. That custom caused it to be denominated "Clerks Well, " and from which this parish derived its name". From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1857, depicts the Pump in Ray-Street, Clerkenwell-Green, a historical relic of London's past. The pump, which was removed from its original location at that time, was an essential part of the community for centuries and holds a significant connection to the history of the Clerkenwell area. The pump, which was supplied from the Clerks' Well, was not only a source of water but also a gathering place for the parish clerks, or "clerken," who would assemble there to perform Scripture plays. This tradition gave the well its name, and in turn, the parish of Clerkenwell derived its name from it. The inscription board on the pump reads that it was last renovated in 1800 by William Bound and Joseph Bird, who served as churchwardens at the time. The pump was moved to its current location for the convenience of the neighborhood. The spring from which the pump was supplied was situated just four feet eastward. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, provides a glimpse into the rich history of Clerkenwell and the traditions that shaped the community. The pump, with its historical significance, stands as a reminder of the past and the stories that continue to be a part of London's heritage.
