Purchasing eggs and fowls of the natives - from a sketch by our special artist in China, 1860. Creator: Unknown

China - the British Forces in Talien-Wan - Purchasing eggs and fowls of the natives - from a sketch by our special artist in China, 1860. Food is scarce...[so] we went ashore in search of fresh provision...at length [we] saw the pretty village at our feet. We...were politely received by the inhabitants. We signified our desire for eggs and fowls, and presently small boys were observed running after the cackling birds, and grown-up men disappeared for a short time, returning with splendid eggs. We communicated with them through the medium of a southern boy belonging to one of the party; and, though they could not understand each other, yet they comprehended the written character perfectly. Their manners were quite comme il faut. We offered them payment; we put the money into their girdles, but they would not accept any recompense, neither would they take their fowls back again, but pressed them upon our acceptance, and placed them in the boat. The rest of our party went to eat oysters on the rocks, while I remained sketching among the people, much to their delight; no small boys being allowed to get into my light or way, and I had to smoke innumerable pipes of strong tobacco. After a while our party returned satiated...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from a sketch by an unknown British artist in China during the year 1860, depicts the scene of British soldiers purchasing eggs and fowls from the native inhabitants of Talien-Wan. The image captures the moment of exchange, with native boys chasing after fowls and men returning with eggs, while the soldiers look on. According to an account published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, the British forces were in search of fresh provisions as food was scarce. They went ashore and were warmly welcomed by the villagers. The soldiers expressed their desire for eggs and fowls, and the natives, though they could not understand each other's language, were able to communicate through the use of written characters. The natives were gracious hosts, refusing any payment for their offerings and even insisting on giving the soldiers more than they had asked for. The scene is one of cultural exchange and hospitality, with the soldiers taking in the sights and sounds of the native village while enjoying their freshly procured meal. The artist captures the essence of the moment, with the vibrant colors and lively energy of the native people contrasting with the uniformed soldiers. The photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the interactions between the British and Chinese peoples during this period of history.
