Rajahs introduced to each other while waiting for the Prince of Wales at Calcutta...1876. Creator: William James Palmer

Rajahs introduced to each other while waiting for the Prince of Wales at Calcutta, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. Royal visit of the future King Edward VII to India. Soon after three the native chiefs and the officials who had been invited to the reception-platform began to arrive. One of the first to come was the Maharajah of Rewah, who was resplendent in a dress of mauve embroidered with gold. Hardly less splendid were Scindia and the Maharajah of Jeypore; while, on the other hand, Holkar and Sir Salar Jung presented a striking contrast from the extreme simplicity of their attire...The native chiefs appeared to mix freely with one another, and to have entirely waived for the occasion the strict formality and ceremony to which Indian Princes usually attach so much importance'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled 'Rajahs introduced to each other while waiting for the Prince of Wales at Calcutta' by William James Palmer, captures a historic moment during the Royal visit of the future King Edward VII to India in 1876. The image, originally published in the Illustrated London News, depicts a group of Maharajas and British officials gathered on a reception platform, eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Prince of Wales. The Maharajah of Rewah, dressed in a resplendent mauve outfit adorned with gold embroidery, stands out amongst the crowd. Scindia and the Maharajah of Jeypore, equally impressive in their splendid attire, are also present. In stark contrast, Holkar and Sir Salar Jung appear in simple clothing. The native chiefs are seen mingling freely with one another, breaking away from the rigid formality and ceremony that usually characterizes Indian royal gatherings. This unique moment of unity and camaraderie is a testament to the complex relationships between the British and Indian rulers during the British Raj. The photograph, an engraving from the original sketch by an ILN special artist, offers a glimpse into the rich textures and vibrant colors of 19th-century Indian apparel, as well as the European influence on fashion during the British colonial era. The image is a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in the history of the British Empire in India.
