EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16th century oil painting, titled "Rinaldo and Armida," is an anonymous masterpiece from the workshop of Paolo Veronese or Paolo Caliari. The painting depicts the famous scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem "Jerusalem Delivered," where the warrior Rinaldo, played by the figure on the left, is shown in a moment of tender romance with the sorceress Armida, portrayed on the right. The idyllic landscape setting, filled with vibrant colors and lush greenery, contrasts sharply with the violent and chaotic events that preceded this moment in the poem. Rinaldo and Armida's love story is a complex and dramatic one, filled with deception, betrayal, and ultimately, redemption. Armida, an enchantress, had previously seduced Rinaldo and held him captive in her magical garden, intending to keep him for herself. However, she is eventually moved by Rinaldo's unwavering love for his beloved, Angelica, and releases him. In this painting, we see Rinaldo and Armida in a more peaceful and intimate moment, before their eventual parting. The painting is a testament to the enduring power of love and the human capacity for redemption, themes that were popular during the Renaissance period. The use of oil on canvas and the rich, vibrant colors add to the painting's beauty and depth, making it a valuable addition to the collection of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden.
