EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the grandeur of the C.M. Schwab residence, located on Riverside Drive in Manhattan, New York, between 1910 and 1920. The Beaux-Arts style mansion, with its intricate stonework and elegant columns, stands proudly on the banks of the Hudson River, overlooking the city skyline. The residence was once owned by Charles Michael Schwab, a prominent American industrialist and businessman, who made his fortune as the president of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is a dry plate negative glass 8 x 10 in, and was originally published by Detroit Publishing Company through their subsidiary, the Congressional Library. The image showcases the mansion's beautiful landscaping, with lush greenery and trees framing the house and the river. The C.M. Schwab residence, a testament to the opulence of the Gilded Age, was unfortunately demolished in the mid-20th century. Today, the site is home to the Riverside Church and the adjacent Riverside Park. This photograph serves as an important reminder of the history and heritage of New York City and the United States during the 1910s.
