EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite tempera on panel painting depicts Saint John the Evangelist, one of the twelve apostles and the author of the fourth Gospel and the Apocalypse in the New Testament. The work is the right shutter panel of the Tabernacle of the Linaioli, created by the renowned Florentine artist Fra Angelico, also known as Giovanni da Fiesole, around 1433. The painting is currently housed in the San Marco Museum in Florence, Italy. John the Evangelist is shown in traditional attire, dressed in a red tunic and yellow chasuble, with a book in his left hand and a chalice in his right. The chalice symbolizes the Eucharist and represents John's role as a witness to the Last Supper. The book, open to the first verse of the Gospel of John, "In the beginning was the Word," emphasizes his role as the author of the Gospel. The saint's serene expression and gentle gaze convey a sense of deep contemplation and loyalty to Christ. The background landscape, with its rolling hills and peaceful river, adds to the tranquil atmosphere of the painting. The Tabernacle of the Linaioli, a series of four panels, was commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici, the powerful ruler of Florence, for the convent of San Marco. The other panels depict Saint Mark the Evangelist, Saint Luke the Evangelist, and Saint John the Baptist. Fra Angelico's masterful use of color, composition, and symbolism make these works some of the most significant examples of Early Renaissance art. The painting's intricate details and subtle nuances reveal the deep theological understanding and spiritual depth of Fra Angelico, making it a profound and inspiring work of art that continues to captivate viewers to this day.
