The Threatening Note, 1865. Attorney Lincoln. Now, Uncle Sam, You re in A Darned Hurry to Serve this Here Notice on John Bull. Now, Its My Duty, as Your Attorney, to tell You that You May Drive Him to Go Over to that Cuss, Davis- (Uncle Sam Considers). During previous decades, a number of Treaties had been made between Britain and the United States that involved US borders with Canada. However, the US had long felt that the terms of such treaties had been forced upon them and now that Lincoln had been re-elected, the Senate proposed to repeal their terms and conditions. However, President Lincoln, speaking to the eagle, Uncle Sam, recommends caution as the northern states do not want to drive Britain into declaring support for their opponents. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "The Threatening Note, 1865" artist John Tenniel captures a pivotal moment in American history. Depicting President Abraham Lincoln as Attorney Lincoln, the artwork portrays Uncle Sam, symbolizing the United States, contemplating a threatening note served by John Bull, representing Britain. During this time, tensions between the two nations were high due to previous treaties that America felt had been unfairly imposed upon them. With Lincoln's re-election and the Senate proposing to repeal these terms and conditions, caution was advised. The president is seen discussing with an eagle - symbolizing freedom and strength - urging restraint as driving Britain into supporting their opponents could have dire consequences for the northern states. This political cartoon from Punch magazine in February 1865 showcases Tenniel's satirical style and his ability to convey complex ideas through visual imagery. The inclusion of Uncle Sam considering his options while surrounded by discarded papers in a wastepaper basket adds depth to the composition. "The Threatening Note" serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of power during this tumultuous period in American history. It highlights Lincoln's astute leadership skills as he navigated international relations while keeping domestic interests at heart. This iconic print continues to be celebrated for its historical significance and artistic merit today.
