This print showcases the Tower of Demetrius Poliorcetes during the intense Siege of Rhodes in 305 BC. Painted by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch in 1842, this artwork beautifully captures a pivotal moment in ancient Greek history. Demetrius, son of Antigonus I, initiated the siege to break Rhodes' alliance with Ptolemy I of Egypt. Employing an array of impressive siege engines, including a towering wheeled structure standing at a staggering height of 130 feet, Demetrius aimed to conquer the city. However, despite his relentless efforts and ingenious military engineering tactics, he ultimately failed to capture Rhodes and abandoned the siege after a year. The lithograph featured here is taken from Dr Franz Kottenkamp's renowned publication "A History of the Development and Customs of Chivalry" (1842). Its vivid colors bring life to this historical event that unfolded centuries ago.
