EDITORS COMMENTS
This view of the Rotterdam gate and the Ketelpoort in Delft, Netherlands, dates back to the 18th century. Anonymous artist Anon has skillfully captured the essence of this historic scene on prepared paper using watercolor and possibly etching techniques. In the left background, the imposing Rotterdam gate stands tall, its arched entrance inviting travelers into the city. On the right, the Ketelpoort, or "Kettle Gate," is adorned with intricate brickwork and is guarded by two men. Boats laden with goods and people are docked along the canal, adding to the bustling urban scene. The women in traditional Dutch clothing add a touch of color and charm to the black-and-white image. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of men loading and unloading cargo from the boats, as well as the horses and carts that line the street. This view offers a glimpse into the daily life and transportation methods of the time, making it an invaluable historical record. The image is believed to be the work of either Georg Balthasar Probst from Germany or one of the Haastert brothers - Isaac van Haastert, J. van Haastert, or Izak van Haastert - all of whom were active in the Netherlands during the 18th century. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is home to this precious piece of European heritage art.
