EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the determination and courage of two legendary mountaineers, Major Edward "Teddy" F. Norton and George Herbert Leigh Mallory, during the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition. The image was taken at an estimated altitude of nearly 27,000 feet in the Himalayas of Nepal. Mallory, wearing sunglasses and a thick scarf, holds an ice axe in one hand and an ice pick in the other, while Norton, with a determined look on his face, adjusts the scales on his climbing equipment. The steep, icy slope behind them testifies to the challenging conditions they faced during their attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. Mallory and Norton were part of the third British expedition to Mount Everest, led by Charles Howard-Bury. They had previously attempted to summit the mountain in 1921, but were forced to turn back due to bad weather and lack of oxygen. In 1922, they made another attempt, but unfortunately, they and their Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, disappeared near the summit and were presumed to have perished. Their bodies were not discovered until 1999. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and perseverance of early mountaineers, who pushed the boundaries of human endurance in their quest to conquer the world's highest peaks.
