Dated circa 1901, the image shows Baden-Powell, with a stern yet determined expression, standing next to his charger in South Africa during the Second Boer War. Baden-Powell's association with South Africa began during the war when he was tasked with defending the town of Mafeking against the Boer forces. His successful defense of Mafeking, which lasted for over two years, earned him the nickname "The Hero of Mafeking."
