Chez Victor: A 1920s Haven of Glamour and Nightlife by Fish Step into the enchanting world of Chez Victor, a legendary restaurant and nightclub located above the Grafton Galleries on London's prestigious Grafton Street. This evocative illustration by the talented artist Fish captures the essence of this fashionable 1920s hotspot, where the rich and famous came to dine, dance, and socialize. The interior of Chez Victor is a feast for the eyes, with its art deco design and opulent decor. The dancefloor is the center of attention, filled with elegantly dressed men and women, lost in the moment as they sway to the rhythm of the jazz music. The atmosphere is electric, charged with the excitement of the Roaring Twenties. Chez Victor was a favorite haunt of the then Prince of Wales and was best remembered for the romantic serenades of Lesley Hutchinson, or 'Hutch,' to the socialite Edwina Mountbatten and other high society figures. The club was the epitome of glamour and sophistication, a place where the elite came to let their hair down and indulge in the decadent pleasures of the era. The club's owner, Victor Perosino, presided over this haven of nightlife with an iron fist, ensuring that the atmosphere remained exclusive and the guests were treated to the best that money could buy. However, in 1929 or 1930, Chez Victor was raided by the authorities, leading to Perosino's deportation. This stunning illustration by Fish transports us back to a bygone era, a time of cocktails, cocktail parties, and carefree nights spent dancing the night away. Chez Victor remains an iconic symbol of the 1920s, a time when London was the center of the social universe, and the city's nightlife was the envy of the world.
