EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the arid expanse of the Jordan Valley during the First World War, the Anzac Desert Mounted Corps made their mark in the sands of time. In this evocative photograph, a group of soldiers from the Corps are seen mounted on their steadfast camels, their faces etched with determination and grit. The dry, dusty terrain stretches out before them, a seemingly endless expanse of sand and rock that seems to shimmer in the intense Middle Eastern sun. The Anzac Desert Mounted Corps, a part of the Australian and New Zealand Army, played a crucial role in the Middle Eastern theatre of the Great War. Their camels, which were well-suited to the harsh desert conditions, were used primarily for transport and reconnaissance purposes. The Corps saw action in various campaigns, including the Sinai and Palestine Campaigns, and played a significant part in the eventual defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the region. The image captures the desolation and isolation of the war-torn landscape, with the soldiers and their camels appearing as small figures against the vast backdrop of the desert. The hot, dry climate, the endless expanse of sand, and the dust that hung in the air were all challenges that the Corps had to face in their mission to advance through the Middle East. Yet, despite the harsh conditions, the soldiers pressed on, their resolve unwavering, their spirits undeterred. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Anzac Desert Mounted Corps during the First World War, and the incredible resilience and determination that carried them through the challenges of the desert.
