EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when H.M.S Caledonia, formerly the Cunard White Star Liner Majestic, sets sail from Southampton on its way to Rosyth to be transformed into a naval training establishment for artificers boys on 8th April 1937. In this image, we see the iconic ocean liner, now with three of her funnels shortened and her mast reduced to a stump, making its way out of the harbor. The Majestic had been purchased by the Admiralty for £391,333 and was converted into a floating school for future seamen and naval engineers. Captain Atwell Lake was appointed to command the ship, which would soon become an essential part of the British naval training program. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the repurposing of this magnificent vessel from a commercial liner to a vital tool for national defense. The Caledonia's journey from Southampton marked the beginning of a new chapter in her storied history.
