EDITORS COMMENTS
Ileana Hohenzollern, the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania and Queen Marie, is depicted in this striking photograph in naval uniform, taken between the years 1909 and 1914. Ileana's regal lineage is evident in her poised and confident demeanor, as she was not only a member of the Romanian royal family but also a descendant of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. At the time of this photograph, Ileana had already made headlines for her marriage to Archduke Anton of Austria, which took place in 1909. The union between the Romanian princess and the Austrian archduke was significant, as it marked the first time that a member of the Habsburg and Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen families had married. Despite her royal status, Ileana was known for her manly and butch appearance, which was unusual for women of her time. Her decision to wear a naval uniform in this photograph further emphasizes her unconventional nature. The uniform, with its crisp lines and traditional design, accentuates her strong and athletic build, making for a striking and memorable image. Ileana's life was marked by both personal and political turmoil. She and her husband, Archduke Anton, were forced to flee Austria during World War I and spent the rest of their lives in exile. Ileana passed away in 1991, leaving behind a legacy as a trailblazing royal figure who defied gender norms and expectations. This photograph captures a moment in time when Ileana, dressed in her naval uniform, embodies her fearless spirit and determination.
