EDITORS COMMENTS
John Gunn: A Nottinghamshire and England Cricketing Legend on Tour in Australia, 1901-1902 This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the intense focus and determination of John Robert Gunn (1876-1955), a distinguished cricketer from Nottinghamshire who represented England in the historic tour of Australia under the leadership of Arthur Shrewsbury (Arthur C. MacLaren) in 1901-1902. Gunn, a left-handed batsman and occasional right-arm fast-medium bowler, is seen here in mid-action, poised to deliver a powerful blow. His strong, muscular build and confident stance exude the athleticism and skill required to excel in this challenging and demanding sport. The crease marks on the ground beneath his feet underscore the importance of precision and discipline in cricket, while the backdrop of a lush, green outfield and a clear blue sky evoke the beauty and tranquility of the Australian landscape. The tour of Australia, which took place between November 1901 and March 1902, was a significant moment in the history of English cricket. It marked the first time that an English team had toured Australia since the infamous Bodyline series in 1932-1933, and it provided an opportunity for both sides to rebuild their relationships and showcase their talents on the international stage. Gunn made his Test debut against Australia in the second Test at Sydney in January 1902, scoring 12 and 11. He went on to play in five further Tests, scoring a total of 174 runs at an average of 21.75. His highest score came in the fourth Test at Adelaide, where he scored 69 runs. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of cricket and the enduring legacy of John Gunn, a true sportsman and a champion of his time.
