EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of discovery and achievement as the legendary explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, led the Lewis and Clark Expedition, reached the Missouri River in 1806. Having begun their journey in May 1804, the intrepid explorers had faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather, unfamiliar terrain, and encounters with various Native American tribes. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery, was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore and map the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, which had been purchased from France in 1803. Their mission was to find a practical route across the Western half of the continent, establish an American presence in the region, and gather valuable information about the natural resources and indigenous peoples. As they approached the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, Lewis and Clark were filled with a sense of accomplishment. They had successfully traversed the vast wilderness, faced numerous hardships, and had made invaluable discoveries about the land and its inhabitants. This image, taken from a historical print by Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the spirit of adventure and determination that defined the Lewis and Clark Expedition and left an indelible mark on American history. The Lewis and Clark Expedition lasted for two years, covering a distance of approximately 8,000 miles. Their journals, maps, and other records provided essential information for the development of the American West and helped to expand the nation's territorial claims. This iconic moment in American history continues to inspire awe and admiration for the explorers' courage and determination.
