EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Shri Sir Nripendra Narayan, Maharaja of Cooch Behar, resplendent in the dismounted review order uniform of a British officer of the 6th (Prince of Wales's) Bengal Cavalry. The Maharaja, born in 1862, ruled the princely state of Cooch Behar from 1884 until his death in 1911. During the British Raj, it was customary for Indian princes to be trained in European military traditions and to maintain their own personal armies. The Maharaja of Cooch Behar was no exception. He served as a lieutenant in the Bengal Cavalry, a regiment of the British Indian Army, and was known for his exceptional horsemanship and military prowess. The uniform worn by the Maharaja in this photograph is a testament to his close ties with the British colonial administration. The 6th Bengal Cavalry was a prestigious regiment, and the Maharaja's decision to adopt its uniform was a symbol of his allegiance to the British and his commitment to modernizing his state. Despite his loyalty to the British, the Maharaja remained a proud and independent ruler. He was known for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to promote education and social welfare in his state. This photograph offers a glimpse into the complex and fascinating world of a princely ruler during the British Raj, a time when traditional Indian customs and European influences intersected in intriguing ways. The Maharaja's regal presence and impeccable uniform are a reminder of a bygone era, a time when the lines between colonial rule and princely autonomy were blurred, and when the rich tapestry of Indian history was being woven anew.
