EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria de Molina, also known as Maria Alfonso Tellez de Menezes (1265-1321), is depicted in this vibrant 19th century engraving as a brave and protective figure, defending the infant Don Juan, the future King Juan I of Castille and Leon. Maria was the consort of Sancho IV of Castille and became a prominent regent in the Iberian Peninsula during the 13th century. Born into the House of Burgundy, Maria rose to power when her husband Sancho IV died in 1295, leaving their son Ferdinand IV as the new king at the tender age of five. Maria took on the role of regent, ruling in her son's name and ensuring the stability of the realm during a time of political instability. When Ferdinand came of age, he continued to rely on his mother's wisdom and guidance, making her an influential figure in Castille and Leon. When Ferdinand died in 1312, leaving an infant son, Alfonso XI, as the new monarch, Maria once again stepped in as regent. She continued to govern until Alfonso reached the age of majority in 1321. This engraving captures a poignant moment in Maria's life as she defends the young Don Juan from an unseen threat, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to protecting the royal line and upholding the dignity of the crown. Maria de Molina's legacy as a powerful and capable regent during the Middle Ages continues to be celebrated in Spanish history, making her an enduring symbol of strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
