EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary I of England (1516-1558), also known as Mary Tudor, was the Queen of England and Ireland from 1553 until her death. Daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Mary was the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. This stunning portrait of Mary, painted by the Italian artist Antonio Moro around 1554-1555, is currently housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. Mary is depicted in the modern age, seated on a throne with a rose and a golden pearl in her hand. The rose symbolizes the House of Tudor, while the pearl represents her virginity and purity. Mary wears an intricately designed jeweled crown adorned with precious stones and a necklace with a large pearl pendant. Her regal attire is adorned with gold and jewels, reflecting her status as a monarch. Mary's hand rests on a scepter, signifying her power and authority as queen. Her expression is serene and confident, reflecting her strong leadership qualities. The portrait showcases the beauty and elegance of the Tudor monarchy during the 16th century, a time of great change and upheaval in English and Irish history. Mary's reign was marked by her efforts to restore Catholicism in England after the Protestant Reformation under her father and brother, King Edward VI. Her policies led to the execution of Protestant leaders and the persecution of Protestants, earning her the nickname 'Bloody Mary.' Despite her controversial reign, Mary I remains an important figure in English and Irish history, and this portrait by Antonio Moro is a testament to her legacy as a powerful and influential monarch.
