Sir Charles Napier (1786-1860), a prominent British admiral of the 19th century, is depicted in this striking engraving. Born at Merchiston Hall in Scotland in 1786, Napier rose through the ranks of the British Army before transferring to the Royal Navy in 1803. He saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, most notably at the Battle of Trafalgar under Admiral Nelson.
