EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration, LS Plate 95 from the John Reeves Collection, showcases the intricate anatomy of the Limulus polyphemus, or Atlantic horseshoe crab. John Reeves, a 19th Century Tea Inspector, traveled extensively to Canton, China, where he developed an impressive collection of Chinese natural history drawings. This illustration, executed in exquisite detail, captures the unique features of this ancient marine arthropod. The horseshoe crab, a member of the Decapoda order and the Limulidae family, is characterized by its distinctive horseshoe-shaped body and long, spindly legs. Its body is covered in a tough, green exoskeleton, with a series of brown, segmented rings. The horseshoe crab's most notable feature, however, is its large, compound eyes, which are located on the front of its body. These eyes are used to detect both light and dark, making the horseshoe crab an important predator in its coastal habitats. The horseshoe crab's legs are adapted for both walking on land and swimming in water. Each leg is tipped with a small, sharp claw, which is used for defense and for turning the horseshoe crab over when it is mating or laying eggs. The horseshoe crab is also notable for its blue, copper-based blood, which is used in the medical industry for the production of Limulus amebocyte lysate, a substance used to detect bacterial contamination in intravenous solutions. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the horseshoe crab, a remarkable and ancient invertebrate that has survived for over 450 million years. The intricate details and precise annotations in the illustration attest to the skill and expertise of the Chinese artist who created it, making it a valuable addition to the John Reeves Collection.
