EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts four vibrant American warblers: the Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens, birds 1 and 2), the Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens, bird 3), and the Northern Parula (Setophaga americana, bird 4). Originally illustrated by the renowned ornithological artist John James Audubon, this piece was published in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890 by E.K. Mayers in Harrisburg. The Black-throated Blue Warblers are easily identified by their distinctive black throat, blue wings, and yellow underparts. The Black-throated Green Warbler, on the other hand, boasts a green back, yellow underparts, and a black mask. The Northern Parula, with its bright yellow body and blue-green back, is a striking contrast to the other warblers. This 19th-century illustration showcases the intricate details and vibrant colors of these birds, providing a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating creatures. The use of chromolithography, a printing technique that allowed for the production of detailed and colorful images, further enhances the beauty of this artwork. John James Audubon was a pioneering figure in the field of ornithology, and his meticulous illustrations of North American birds remain a testament to his dedication and passion for the natural world. This piece is a valuable addition to any collection of ornithological art or a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the United States during the late 19th century.
